human camera — LINDSAY SEERS

A new book designed by IMMPRINT LTD for the Artist Lindsay Seers.
A cloth case-bound book with foil blocking and silver gilded pages, 180 inside pages printed full colour throughout. The book has been designed as a modern take on a victorian novel/prayer book with a touch of science thrown in. It has been produced in a classic pulp fiction format 6 7/8" x 4 1/4". The light airy feel reflecting the photographic nature of the content and the silver edging/foiling a gentle nod towards the silver nitrate used in early photography. The book was printed and bound in England by BAS printers.

A girl literally turns herself into a camera in order to understand the impact that photography has had on her. Diagnosed as autistic and unable to speak as a child, only by the act of photographing does she establish herself as an agent in the world. The girl becomes the artist Lindsay Seers. Her later expanded roles as a ventriloquist’s dummy and as a projector enable her to question the established idea of the photograph as only referring to what has been. Instead, the photographs and films produced from her actions signal a process of continual transformation and possible becoming.

In Human Camera the formative narrative of the artist is interspersed with texts by writers from a variety of disciplines. Each of these writers offers a differing voice for ways of understanding the implications of the artist’s process. These perspectives are specifically drawn from scientific, philosophical, art historical and biographical positions.

The latest report from the Energy Saving Trust, The Ampere Strikes Back, aims to position EST as the leading authority for sustainable energy use in the home. It is targeted at a wide audience – e.g. consumers, politicians, local govermnent, environmental organisations, etc. – and offers advice on making the best, most energy efficient choices with respect to consumer electronic equipment.

The design style needed to be customer focused, engaging and informative – moving away from the traditional report format of text heavy pages with little imagery. It utilises interesting colourful photography that consumers can relate to and breaks down the text into more easily digestible sections using pull quotes and illustrations to highlight key messages. The use of visually appealing information graphics help readers relate to the issues that are addressed.

Our latest piece of work for the Serpentine Gallery was the design of a specially commissioned book for children by artist Paul Chan. The innovative and engaging story introduces children and parents to ideas around language, art, contemporary culture and philosophy. The book launch coincides with the opening of a new Paul Chan exhibition at the gallery.

One of the unique features of the LG Shine phone is its mirrored screen. This was literally reflected in the video we produced for LG and T-Mobile. We set up a mirrored stage so that the phone could be filmed transforming in the reflections, creating unusual and visually captivating imagery.
