hull heroes |
Illuminate was a series of art events held across Yorkshire – as part of this, Jessie Voorsanger's Hull Heroes is a set of eight posters featuring quotes from Hull residents about their encounters with famous people. Jessie supplied us with the concept and the copy and we produced the posters in an over-the-top, garish, 70s style! The posters (and other formats, such as postcards) appeared all over the Hull area. |

Who is BILLY CHILDISH? Billy Childish is an artistic rebel - he hates modern conceptual art, he doesn't like the art establishment and they don't care much for him either. He's a controversial visionary revered by "those in the know" - the White Stripes' Jack White was spotted on 'Top of the Pops' with Billy's name scrawled on his arm. Kylie Minogue released a CD named after one of his poems, called 'Impossible Princess', whilst artist Tracy Emin featured his name on her tent 'Everyone I Have Ever Slept With'. Billy has trodden his own highly individual artistic path, rejecting the contemporary London Brit Art establishment and staying firmly rooted in Chatham where he's lived and worked all of his life. Back in the 90’s The New York Times cited him as “The undisputed king of garage rock’. A stuckist co-founder, see www.stuckism.com Billy Childish is a leading underground figure in America, Europe and Japan, and by far the most prolific poet, painter and songwriter of his generation. In a twenty year period he has published more than thirty collections of poetry, recorded over eighty albums of his music and exhibited his paintings worldwide. Larry Clark wants to make a film of his life. The White Stripes asked him to paint onstage while they performed on Top of the Pops. He has an ongoing and public discourse with significant ex Tracey Emin. (She asks him not to talk about her in newspapers, he responds by telling me about the time Emin asked him to write 'anything he liked' about her in one of her catalogues. 'She turned down three versions,' he recalls. 'In one of them I said: "She hasn't got a radical bone in her body, and she thinks she's a punk rocker but it's New Romantic bilge." She said that I couldn't say that because people would think I was ignorant and jealous of her.') The truth is that Billy Childish, 44-year-old writer, painter and founding member of the Buff Medways isn't much bothered by what people think of him or his work. A singular individual, he has lived life, as he puts it, 'on the wrong end of the seesaw'. www.theebillychildish.com www.billychildish.com |
