UCLB supports venture capital firm MTI to target new investment fund

Published on 9 February 2012

The Orion fund is being launched in a partnership between UCLB, MTI and the technology transfer offices of the Universities of Manchester and Edinburgh.

UCLB will work alongside UMI3 of the University of Manchester and ERI from the University of Edinburgh to identify investment opportunities in spin-outs, from the three universities.

Commenting on the initiative, Sir Richard Heygate of MTI said:

“The United Kingdom has always been one of the most innovative countries in the world, although sometimes it has lagged behind others in turning this creativity into world ranking businesses.

“Today, we have some of the highest ranked universities and business schools, a concentration of leading Private Equity, Venture Capital and other investment skills, a government committed to encouraging innovation and start-up businesses and a secure economy and currency.

“The new fund is well positioned to take advantage of all of these opportunities and create significant new wealth for our investors and our country.”

Cengiz Tarhan, Managing Director of UCLB said “UCLB looks forward to working with MTI and is excited about this partnership which is set to bring in new money and established expertise to realise more spin-outs, from the world class research carried out at UCL.  The Orion fund will be a welcome addition to the funding landscape”.
