Fractions derived from a number of common foods have shown anti-cariogenic and anti-gingivitis activity. Such extracts, and/or compounds purified from them, can be incorporated into mouthwashes, toothpastes and other oral hygiene products.
Currently, the vast majority of oral health care products contain synthetic antimicrobial agents (e.g. chlorhexidine, triclosan) as their active ingredients. There is increasing mistrust among the general public of “man-made” chemicals and increasing support for naturally occurring compounds. This technology is in line with this trend towards using more “natural” ingredients in health care products and represents a novel approach to maintaining oral health. A clinical trial has already shown better anti-gingivitis activity over one of the market leading mouthwash products.
The market for consumer oral health care products is large and in 2004 amounted to €17 billion in the EU alone. These natural products can be incorporated into toothpastes and mouthwash.
